Bob Kephart – Social Distortion – 2013

A radio installed at the Collision Collective opening at the Cyberarts Gallery had a large, blue button just asking to be pressed. Once a pressed, a huge antenna mechanically comes out in response to the press, and the radio turns on. An analog knob moves back and forth robotically as the radio searches for a station, until an appropriate station is locked onto. The cycle repeats itself as the channels are scrubbed through back and forth, like a robotic DJ following his innate sense of chaos theory looking for the right tune to play.

Mechanical systems and aesthetics by Bob Kephart.
Andrew Hlynsky and I worked together on hardware hacking an actual radio and used Arduino and an array of electronics to help with this project.
